[174] MINA SOPHIA ELIZABETH (WARD) BIRD
Mina Sophia Elizabeth Bird, the daughter of John Chandler
and Louise (Klamm) Ward, was born April 21, 1904 on a farm in
Bingham Township in Hancock County. She attended Bingham
Country School # 9, graduated from Wesley High School in 1924
and then attended Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar
Falls, where she received her teaching certificate. For
several years, she taught in the same country school she had
attended as a young girl. September 1, 1927, she was
married to Clarence Albert Bird at the Christian Reformed
parsonage southwest of Woden. They farmed on the Bird home
place until February of 1949, when they moved into town.
After her husband's death, February 18, 1971, Mina continued
to live in Woden. She enjoyed knitting, quilting,
genealogy, traveling, flower gardening and aerobic classes at
the YMCA in Forest City.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church,
Presbyterian Women, the American Legion Auxiliary and a
former member of the United Methodist Church. She had served
as a board member of the Woden Independent School District
and had been active in 4-H work.
She is survived by her children, Charles, Bird and his
wife, Shirley, of Ft Washington, PA, Robert Bird of Woden and
Dale bird and his wife, Glenys, of McHenry, IL: a son-in-law,
Richard McVey and his wife, Dianne, of Omaha, ND, five
grandchildren, four great grandchildren and a brother-in-
-law, Leander Seefeld of Algona.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence A Bird,
her daughter Irma Margaret McVey, January 18, 1974; by her
parents and a sister, Frances Seefeld.
