[340] Willaim Mayer, grandson of St Benedict pioneers, was born in a farm home
in the NW corner of Sec 18, Paririe Twp., Kossuth, County, IA.
He received his education in St Benedict Parochial School and spent his life
farming. He and his wife, Esther (Wolf) Mayer, lived in a new house built
for them in Sec 13, Irivington Twp where their 4 children were born and
raised. Bill and his son had a herd of Brown Swiss cattle and he practiced
the diversified farming done at that time.
In 1952 he became ill with tuberculosis and spent a year in the Sanatorium
at Oakdale, IA. His health improved when a lung was removed, and he
returned home in 1953. In 1952, Bill and Esther moved to a new smaller home
in the Sw corner of Sec 18, Irivington Twp. He was a good Catholic and
attended daily Mass in the last years of his life. He enjoyed playing cards
and making hooked rugs in his retirement.

[330] Esther and her husband, William Mayer,
moved to a new house in Sec 13, Irvington Twp, Kossuth Co, IA shortly after
marriage & lived there until 1994 when they moved to a smaller home they
built in Sec 18, Irvington Twp where they lived until their deaths. Esther did
the usual work of a farm housewife. She loved flowers, crocheted, did
embroidering & loved telling her children about her family. She was a
member of the Catholic Daughters of America & the Rosary Society.

Robert Mayer attended the eight grades offered at St Benedict's parochial
school. Following graduation he chose to farm and was very active in 4-H as
a member and later as a leader. In 1948 he became ill with tuberculosis and
entered the sanatorium at Oakdale, IA. He spent 33 months there and received
the then new drug streptomycin along with pneumo-therapy. He has had no
recurrence of Tuberculosis since that time.
Robert and his father had developed a fine herd of brown Swiss dairy cows
which were eventually sold. Robert has done various kinds of work in
agricultural groups in the community and, at present, serves on the ASCS
(Agriculture Stabilization Conservation Service) for the county. Robert and
his wife left the farm home where he was born and where they had lived and
moved to Algona, IA. They attend St Cecelia's Catholic Church there.

[342] Stella Mayer Eischen attended St Benedict Parochial School, worked at home
and then married and raised a family. She earned her GED (high school
equivalency Diploma) in 1969 and in 1979 received an AA degree from Iowa
Lakes Community College in Emmetsburg, IA in 1989. She has been the organizt
at St Benedict's Church for over 50 years, was Regent of the St Benedict
Catholic Daughters of America and held most of the offices in that
organization. She has been St Benedict community correspondent for the Algona
IA, newspaper since 1977. She sews wedding attire and does altering and
mending for people in the area. She is a member of the Kossuth County
Democratic Central Committee.

Jane (Mayer) Cooper attended St Benedict Parochial school and St Cecelia's
high school and then the American Institute of Business in DesMoines, IA.
She worked in the newsroom of radio Station WHO in DesMoines for Jack Shelley
and was there when Ronald "Dutch" Regan was a sportscaster. When she married
Jane & her husband moved to LosAngeles, CA where she worked at the Encino Bank
for a time - a bank that had several movie stars as patrons

[344] Ramona Ann Mayer atended St Benedict Parochial School and graduated from St
Cecelia's Academy in Algona, IA in 1947. She became ill with tuberculosis in
1949 and entered the sanatorium at Oakdale, IA and was there about 4 years
receiving the then new treatments for tubeerculosis along with complete bed
and the resh air of the "porches"
As part of her rehabilitation she took courses at the University of Iowa at
Iowa City and graduated with a degree in chemistry about 1956. The then
accepted a position at the Batelle Institute in Columbus, OH. She advanced
in the research work done there and, for years and up until her retirement she
was in charge of cancer research control, a program which she had designed. Of
special interest is the work she did to ensure the success of the first space
flights, observing the astronauts in Houston TX to determine their food
preferences and her help in developing some of the freeze dried food items
for use in space. She attended international space meetings in Russia,
France and Switzerland during her career at Batelle She retired in 1991 and
enjoys golf and bridge. She never married.
